We have announced new October dates for our Understanding the Governance of Charitable Foundations Seminar in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

Presented by David Ward, Philanthropy Australia’s Treasurer, this seminar is an essential refresher and introduction on governance for grantmakers, tailored to attendees’ needs and structures.

An exploration of issues and considerations for trustees of charitable trusts and foundations in Australia, topics covered include the structure of charitable trusts, governance and the role trustees play; what trustees must do and what trustees should consider doing; and governance failure.

Perhaps you’ve come across some of these questions in relation to your foundation:

    • What are the implications for our Public Ancillary Fund with the recent changes in tax laws?
    • How can I be told that some organisations with both DGR and TCC are not eligible for grants from my PAF?
    • What is wrong in having a grant condition stating that if money isn’t fully spent on this project the organisation must give the remainder back?
    • Why cannot my foundation support good small TCC Charities that desperately need help?
    • Why can this foundation only distribute in Victoria when others can fund deserving projects in the Northern Territory?

If you don’t know the answers, Understanding the Governance of Charitable Foundations Seminar will help.

    Who should attend?

This seminar is an ideal base for new trustees and foundation staff; useful to those providing advice on setting up foundations and trusts; and an excellent reference document and aide memoire to those already familiar with its subject.  This seminar also provides an opportunity for those with significant interaction with foundations and trusts to understand the responsibilities and issues considered by Trustees.

    Dr Dorothy Scott Oration

We’re pleased to provide Emeritus Professor Dorothy Scott’s Oration speech transcript, presented to a public audience last night at the University of Melbourne. Dorothy’s breadth of knowledge on philanthropic intent is evident in her fascinating talk on In cash or in kind? For love or money? For now or forever?

    A brief excerpt:

Most philanthropic giving in kind is not activism philanthropy but it also involves contributing knowledge and labour. From the expertise encompassed in not for profit boards of management to the efforts of the environmental volunteers who plant trees on a large scale, the contribution in kind is huge.

Philanthropic foundations themselves can also make a significant contribution in kind, as a recent study undertaken at the Myer Foundation by intern Lesley Harris, has illustrated. Based on surveying 10 foundations, Lesley identified the broad range of non-grantmaking contribution they made, from trustees using their influence to be advocates for grant recipient organisations, to serving on advisory councils and bringing together different organisations to pursue a common goal. Sometimes it goes much further than this. The work of the R.E. Ross Trust with Aboriginal communities along the Murray, drawing on Rebekah Lautman’s social work and community development skills, is an excellent example of the added value which a philanthropic trust can provide. In some areas of grantmaking, it is not a matter of in cash or in kind. Without the in kind support, the cash will not suffice. “Can we do deeds as well as donations?” could be a useful question to build into all grantmaking practice.

The Australian Charities Fund inaugural Australian Workplace Giving Awards were announced this week at the NSW Parliament House in Sydney. In their recent media release, ACF’s CEO Edward Kerr said the judges were impressed by the number and high quality of submissions.

“The quality of submissions made choosing a winner in some categories very difficult. As a result there were a number of instances where the judges recommended issuing a Highly Commended Award in addition to naming a winner,”  Kerr said.

In ACF’s recent study, ‘Cutting to the Heart of Workplace Giving’, it’s estimated that workplace giving now generates approximately $20million per year in donations, providing non-profit organisations with steady, reliable funds.

Philanthropy Australia would like to congratulate the winners, and pass on our appreciation to all Australian workplaces implementing workplace giving schemes to allow employees to contribute significant regular giving to community organisations.

    Winners and Highly Commended
