The Awesome Foundation arrives in Melbourne

The Awesome Foundation idea is simple: create a monthly $1,000 grant awarded to a person doing something ‘awesome’ – whether it’s music, film, art, technology, design, food, publishing or anything else. The money will be spent on a project, activity or research, which could be for fun, for profit or for community benefit.
The Awesome Foundation has emerged in cities across the world, funding things like…
- Audio tours that walk you through the affects of climate change in the San Francisco Bay Area
- Putting the stars and constellations back into London’s night sky
- Kites with cameras to take footage of the Gulf oil spill
- An armada of toxin cleansing pods for New York City’s East River
To make this happen in Melbourne, Ross and Eddie are seeking a limited, committed group of 10 micro-trustees to form the core board. The obligations are simple, but serious:
- Be willing to commit $100 per month in the interest of Awesome.
- Contribute the money in the form of cash or cheque at a monthly grant review session.
- Play an active role in accepting applications and collectively deciding who gets them.
- Commit to finding a replacement micro-trustee, should you need to back out of the financial obligation of being a micro-trustee of the Awesome Foundation.
If this interests you and you’d like to be one of the ten, please email ross@rosshill.com.au
The first Awesome Foundation Melbourne grant will be awarded in January 2011.

Bruce Bonyhady to deliver the Oswald Barnett Oration

Bruce Bonyhady, President of Philanthropy Australia and Chairman of Yooralla, is to deliver the 16th annual Oswald Barnett Oration on Thursday 21 October 2010.
Titled ‘Reforming Disability Policy: From Charity and Welfare to Social Insurance and Investment’, the oration is presented by Housing Choices Australia, Hanover and Justice and International Mission, Uniting Church in Australia.
The major public policy reforms of the last 30 years have largely bypassed the disability sector and the current welfare and charity model that underpins support for people with disabilities, their families and carers is in crisis. There are strong parallels between Oswald Barnett’s successful quest for housing justice and the current proposal to establish a National Disability Insurance Scheme.
When: Thursday 21 October 2010, 5.30pm for a 6.00pm start
Where: Treasury Theatre, 1 Macarthur Street, Melbourne
Download the flyer for more information.
RSVP to Danica Pasinis on 8636 9440 or email danica.pasinis@hcau.org.au by Monday 18 October.

There’s now less than a fortnight to go before the 2010 Community Foundations Forum, jointly hosted by Philanthropy Australia and the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal, opens in Melbourne.
The Forum will highlight the unique role of community foundations as catalysts and leaders on a grass-roots level, and will be a wonderful opportunity for Community Foundation practitioners and board members. It’s also a great pleace for potential donors to Community Foundations, or for those in Government and the public service interesting in learning about what a Community Foundation can do, are currently achieving, and hope to achieve for the Australian community in the years ahead.
Sessions at the Forum will cover a wide range of topics including a review of legal topics, governance issues, specialised software, investment, accounting and more. There will also be ample networking time to mingle with the passionate and active Community Foundation sector!

At the Philanthropy Australia Conference held in Melbourne on 1 September 2010, a session was conducted on a new publication Time Will Tell, which showcases some examples of ‘good’ philanthropy. As part of the session, an exercise was conducted with participants sharing their views on ‘what makes ‘good’ philanthropy’.
Combining the data from 137 participants, comparisons are given to see what differences exist between philanthropic, not-for-profit and other types of organisations.
Among the findings from the beginning of the session:
- NFPs (15%) are less likely to rank Collaborations and Partnerships (Philanthropic 22% & Other 25%)
- Philanthropic (12%) are more likely to rank Clear Outcomes & Evalaution (NFPs 7% & Other 7%)
Just over half of responses (52%) indicated that they changed their ideas regarding what makes ‘good’ philanthropy at the completion of the session. The most changes were in the areas of partnerships and collaborations (33%), Time (24%) and to take on more risk (19%).
